A Sound of Thunder

From Washington, D.C.

About

A Sound of Thunder built their reputation on a potent combination: the operatic voice of Nina Osegueda, who once sang with the Washington National Opera, fronting a heavy metal band that refuses to stay in one lane. Founded in 2008 by guitarist Josh Schwartz and drummer Chris Haren, the D.C. area group found their footing after a string of lineup changes and have since pushed through power metal, progressive metal, and everything in between. They have always done things on their own terms, funding most of their albums through Kickstarter campaigns with a fanbase loyal enough to blow past every goal they set. Their fifth record, Tales from the Deadside, pulled in three times its target, and It Was Metal in 2018 raised over sixty six thousand dollars. That seventh album even featured comedian Brian Posehn as the voice of a dragon in its animated video, which is exactly the kind of move that makes this band hard to pigeonhole. Along the way they have worked with producers who cut records with Johnny Cash and Shinedown, landed on the Billboard Heatseeker chart, and shared stages and studio space with members of Raven, Rainbow, and Hawkwind. Osegueda remains one of the most distinctive voices in American heavy metal.
