About
Also known as: Build to Spill, Буилт То Спилл
Built to Spill has been one of indie rock's most distinctive voices since forming in Boise, Idaho in 1992, built almost entirely around guitarist and vocalist Doug Martsch as the sole permanent member. His approach has always been unconventional: on their 1997 Warner Bros. debut Perfect from Now On, seven of the eight tracks run past the six minute mark, a deliberate move because, as Martsch put it, he didn't want their stuff on the radio. That record, along with There's Nothing Wrong with Love and Keep It Like a Secret, all landed in Pitchfork's top 50 albums of the 1990s. Keep It Like a Secret broke the band commercially too, debuting at number 120 on the Billboard 200 and selling 60,000 copies within a year. Their 2009 record There Is No Enemy ended up being their highest charting release. Martsch has always kept the lineup fluid, rotating musicians in and out over the years, and the band has kept releasing music well into the 2020s, with videos for tracks like Fool's Gold and Gonna Lose appearing in 2022.
