Christina Aguilera grew up knowing she wanted to sing, and by the time she was a teenager she had already landed two things in the same week: the theme song for the Disney film Mulan and a record deal with RCA Records. That song, 'Reflection', came from a remarkable audition where she hit a high note she later called 'the note that changed my life', recorded in her bathroom as a cover of Whitney Houston's 'Run to You'. Her self titled debut album followed in 1999, going straight to number one in the US and eventually selling over 14 million copies worldwide, making it her best selling record to date. The album pushed a polished pop sound that Aguilera herself was not always happy with, since she wanted to lean harder into R&B. Still, it produced three Billboard Hot 100 number ones and earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist. Her influences run deep, from Etta James and Aretha Franklin to Whitney Houston and Nina Simone, and that vocal ambition has driven everything she has done since. She has gone on to collect seven Grammy Awards across 33 nominations and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
