About

Also known as: Cam

DJ Cam, the Paris born producer Laurent Daumail, built his reputation in the mid 1990s with records like Underground Vibes and Underground Live, which helped define what people now call trip hop and laid the groundwork for lo fi and chill out music. His sound is rooted in instrumental hip hop, laced with jazz, dub, and ambient textures, all stitched together from samples. Underground Vibes is regularly cited as one of the first complete instrumental hip hop albums, and his 1996 record Abstract Manifesto was ranked by Fact as the ninth greatest trip hop album of all time. Over the years he has kept up a remarkably consistent output, founding his own label Inflamable and branching out with the DJ Cam Quartet, a live band format that swaps samples for real instruments. Albums like Soulshine and Liquid Hip Hop featured guest turns from Guru and Cameo, while his 2015 project saw him craft a new soundtrack for the Miami Vice series.
