Max Cooper built his reputation on the intersection of science and sound, which makes sense given he holds a PhD in computational biology. That academic background isn't just a quirky footnote: it genuinely shapes the way he constructs music, layering techno with ambient and electronica textures that feel almost architectural. His 2014 debut album Human landed to strong reviews, with Clash calling it "sumptuous, enticingly beautiful", and the remix EPs that followed drew contributions from Rodriguez Jr. and Lusine among others. Cooper's live shows are a big part of the picture too. His Emergence audiovisual show, which he performs entirely solo, weaves together his scientific and visual instincts into something closer to conceptual art than a standard DJ set. He has played Glastonbury, Fuji Rock and MUTEK, and his collaborations range from pianist Tom Hodge to Bruce Brubaker performing Philip Glass. More recently he released The Sun In A Box, featuring video generated through morphogenesis techniques, and his 2026 track Ebb And Flow keeps that signature blend of electronic depth and striking visuals firmly in place.
