About
Also known as: Moses Frimpong Sumney
Moses Sumney operates in a space where alternative R&B and art pop blur into something genuinely hard to categorise. His 2017 debut album Aromanticism, released on Jagjaguwar, earned him serious attention from Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and The New York Times, which put it among the best albums of that year. The record grew out of his discovery of the term "aromantic" and the way it resonated with him personally. His second album, Græ, came out in two parts across early 2020, and both records have landed on year end lists at Pitchfork, NPR, and Stereogum, among others. Sumney's music has a knack for finding its way into prestige TV, with songs turning up in Orange is the New Black, Westworld, Insecure, Dear White People, and Euphoria. He contributed a cover of Metallica's "The Unforgiven" to The Metallica Blacklist charity album in 2021, and that same year released Blackalachia, a full length concert film shot over two days in the Blue Ridge Mountains, paired with a live album. He has opened for James Blake, Solange Knowles, and Sufjan Stevens, and in 2023 appeared in The Weeknd's HBO series The Idol.
