She Past Away started out as a guitar and bass driven post punk act in Bursa, Turkey in 2006, founded by Volkan Caner on vocals and guitar alongside İdris Akbulut on bass. Their dark, brooding sound draws comparisons to Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus and Depeche Mode, with erotic horror films feeding into their visual aesthetic as much as the music itself. Signing with Athens based Fabrika Records, they put out their debut album Belirdi Gece in 2012 and toured Europe and Mexico to support it. After Akbulut left in 2015, producer Doruk Öztürkcan stepped in as keyboard player, and the band leaned further into electronic textures. Their third album, Disko Anksiyete, arrived in 2019 and pushed into disco influenced territory while keeping their signature coldwave atmosphere intact. Singing in Turkish rather than English gives them a distinct voice in the global dark wave scene, and their international following has grown steadily despite, or perhaps because of, coming from such an unlikely corner of the world for this kind of music.
