Sophie Straat
About
Sophie Straat is a Dutch singer who blends the old school Dutch levenslied tradition with sharp political commentary, which is a combination that has earned her real respect in the Netherlands. Her 2021 debut album 't Is niet mijn schuld won an Edison Pop award for Best Album in the Dutch category, with songs tackling housing shortages, racism and sexism. Her collaborators have included Danny de Munk and the Haagse band Goldband. Her 2023 album Smartlap is niet dood pushed that mix further, featuring a Dutch language rewrite of Fleetwood Mac's Everywhere and a track called Nooit genoeg about addiction. She performed at Pukkelpop that year and appeared in various Dutch TV programmes. Her song Vrijheid, gelijkheid, zusterschap later became a streaming protest anthem in the Netherlands, landing her in the NPO Radio 2 Top 2000.
