About
Ty Segall puts out records the way most people send texts. Since his self titled debut dropped on Castle Face Records in 2008, the Palo Alto musician has stacked up seventeen solo albums alongside a relentless run of EPs, splits, and side projects including Fuzz, GØGGS, and Wasted Shirt. His sound pulls from garage rock, psychedelic rock, glam, and noise, and he has a real gift for making all of it feel urgent rather than retro. His 2012 solo record Twins captures his approach well: he described it as wanting to make "evil, evil space rock, put a little Satan in space," channelling the Stooges, Hawkwind and Sabbath all at once. The more stripped back acoustic album Sleeper followed in 2013, showing a quieter side, while Manipulator in 2014 pushed deeper into psych territory. Live, he performs with the Freedom Band, a tight crew of regular collaborators including Mikal Cronin and Charles Moothart.
