Chef'Special built their reputation the hard way, starting as house band on the hugely popular Dutch TV show De Wereld Draait Door in 2011 and grinding their way up from there. The five piece from Haarlem blends funk, pop rock, ska, and a touch of reggae into a sound that sits somewhere between party music and genuinely affecting songwriting. Their 2014 album Passing Through went straight to number one in the Netherlands, with the single In Your Arms even cracking Billboard's Alternative Songs chart in the US at position 40. Their third album Amigo caught the attention of Twenty One Pilots, who brought them along as openers on the Emotional Roadshow World Tour in 2016. Since then the band has kept pushing creatively: the 2020 album Unfold tackled heavier personal themes like loss and depression, and the single Afraid of the Dark became their biggest hit to date. They are also War Child ambassadors, having collaborated on a fundraising charm made partly from melted steel from an AK 47.
