About
Also known as: Melanie Adele Martinez, Мелани Мартинес, メラニー・マルティネス, 멜러니 마르티네스
Melanie Martinez built a world out of dark nursery rhyme aesthetics and pop music that hits harder than it should. Her debut album Cry Baby, released in 2015 on Atlantic Records, went double platinum and spun off a string of standout singles including Pity Party, Soap and Mrs. Potato Head, each backed by visually striking music videos that lean into her signature doll like look, all two toned hair and babydoll dresses. The whole package is hard to ignore. She first caught attention on season 3 of The Voice in 2012, where she worked with coach Adam Levine and turned covers of songs like Britney Spears's Toxic into something distinctly her own. After the show she went off on her own, releasing the Dollhouse single in 2014 as a fan funded project shot by friends. That scrappy, DIY spirit carried over into a body of work that sits somewhere between indie pop, art pop and alternative pop, always with a theatrical edge and a knack for songs that feel personal without being obvious.
