Aaron Diehl has a way of making jazz feel both rigorous and alive. The Columbus, Ohio born pianist blends post bop with third stream sensibilities, drawing on a classical foundation without ever letting it stiffen his playing. His 2013 debut on Mack Avenue Records, The Bespoke Man's Narrative, hit number one on the JazzWeek Jazz Chart and drew praise for its layered depth, the kind of record that rewards repeated listening. He composed Three Streams of Expression for the 2014 Monterey Jazz Festival, a piece dedicated to the pianist and composer John Lewis. Diehl has toured extensively with vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant and shared stages with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, the New World Symphony, and figures like Benny Golson and Joe Temperley. His 2015 album Space, Time, Continuum brought those collaborations to record. Along the way he has picked up the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Up And Coming Artist and the Prix du Jazz Classique from the Académie du Jazz. Oh, and he is also a licensed pilot.
