About
Adolphus Hailstork is an American composer whose work draws on African, European, and Native American musical traditions, weaving them into a distinctive voice that sits across choral, orchestral, and band repertoire. Based in Virginia Beach, he spent decades as Composer in Residence at both Norfolk State University and Old Dominion University, building a catalog that has picked up prizes from the Ernest Bloch Award to a Fulbright fellowship and a Virginia Cultural Laureate designation. His piece American Guernica won First Prize from the Virginia College Band Directors in 1983, and his choral writing earned a Brock Commission from the American Choral Directors Association. Published by Theodore Presser and Carl Fischer, his scores are widely performed, and in October 2022 BBC Radio 3 spotlighted him as Composer of the Week, introducing his music to a much broader international audience.
