About
Saxophonist, bandleader and composer Ravi Coltrane has spent the past two decades building a body of work that stands apart from the long shadow of his famous parents. Grammy nominated and prolific, he has collaborated with figures such as McCoy Tyner and Jack DeJohnette, founded the independent label RKM, and released six albums under his own name, most recently Spirit Fiction on Blue Note. Yet one of his most significant contributions to music was producing his mother Alice Coltrane's album Translinear Light in 2004, which marked her return to the recording studio after years devoted to spiritual practice and meditation. In this tribute project, Ravi revisits that album alongside harpist Brandee Younger, honouring Alice Coltrane, a singular figure in jazz history who moved fluidly between piano, organ, harp and voice, and whose music wove together gospel, classical, jazz and deep spiritual searching into something entirely her own.
