One of the most distinctive voices in classical music, Alison Balsom spent over two decades as a professional solo trumpet player, carving out a reputation that stretched well beyond the concert hall. Her Italian Concertos disc made the New York Times albums of the year list, and her Caprice album showed she could bring real character to a repertoire that doesn't always get the spotlight it deserves. She won Female Artist of the Year at the Classical BRIT Awards twice, took the Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2013, and was a soloist at the BBC Last Night of the Proms in 2009, performing Haydn's Trumpet Concerto alongside a jazz arrangement of Gershwin with mezzo soprano Sarah Connolly. Balsom was also the principal trumpet of the London Chamber Orchestra and a Visiting Professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She devised Gabriel, a theatrical piece built around Purcell and Handel, performed at Shakespeare's Globe in 2013. In 2025, she announced her retirement from concert performance, citing the limited trumpet repertoire as a key reason, and signed off at the Last Night of the Proms with Hummel's Trumpet Concerto.
