About
Anna Webber's Simple Trio grew out of saxophonist and composer Anna Webber's long creative partnership with drummer John Hollenbeck, whom she first met while studying at the Jazz Institut Berlin. The trio's debut, SIMPLE, came out on Skirl Records in 2014 and was widely praised, followed two years later by Binary, which drew inspiration from some genuinely odd source material including the now defunct automated YouTube account Webdriver Torso, and was partly shaped by assigning pitches and intervals to the numbers in Webber's own IP address. That kind of conceptual rigour is a signature of Webber's work across all her projects. The group features pianist Matt Mitchell alongside Hollenbeck, and sits within a broader body of work that has earned Webber a Guggenheim Award and a BMI Foundation Charlie Parker Jazz Composition Prize. Binary landed to great acclaim and helped cement the trio's reputation as one of the sharper outfits in contemporary avant garde jazz.
