About

Also known as: Jesús Arturo Márquez Navarro

Arturo Márquez spent years working largely in the shadows of the classical music world until Latin ballroom dance culture changed everything. When he discovered the danzón, a music and dance tradition rooted in the Veracruz region of Mexico, it sparked a series of compositions that would eventually carry his name across continents. Danzón No. 2, written in 1994, became his signature piece after Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra performed it on their 2007 European and North American tour, introducing it to massive new audiences. Márquez writes orchestral music that draws deeply from Mexican musical forms, from mariachi and salon music to Cuban and folk influences, weaving them into a contemporary classical framework that feels specific and alive. His Danzones have been staged in ballet productions worldwide, and an international festival in Caracas was named in his honor in 2005. Mexico recognized him with the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in 2009, and he was the first musician to receive the Gold Medal of Fine Arts of Mexico.
