About

Bart Schneemann has spent decades shaping Dutch classical music from multiple angles at once, as a soloist, conductor, teacher, and the driving force behind the Netherlands Wind Ensemble. After holding the first chair oboe seat in both the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and the Rotterdam Philharmonic from 1976 to 1996, he stepped away from orchestra life to focus entirely on solo work and the NBE. His repertoire spans early baroque music all the way to contemporary commissions, and composers including John Zorn, György Kurtág, George Crumb, and Wolfgang Rihm have all written pieces specifically for him. When Schneemann took over the NBE in 1988, he turned a somewhat dormant ensemble into a vibrant, genre crossing group that became a genuine fixture in Dutch cultural life, most visibly through the New Year's concerts at the Concertgebouw broadcast live on TV. The ensemble has also performed on three state visits with Queen Beatrix and played at the coronation of King Willem Alexander. Schneemann currently teaches at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.
