About
Bess Atwell makes the kind of indie folk music that rewards close listening. Her third album, Light Sleeper, released in 2024, was produced by Aaron Dessner, who actually sought her out to work together. The record landed to warm reviews and represents a real step forward for an artist who has been quietly building a compelling body of work. Her earlier album Already, Always came out in 2021, and her debut full length Hold Your Mind arrived when she was just 19. Her sound draws on a rich set of influences: Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Joni Mitchell and The National sit alongside more recent names like Phoebe Bridgers and Julia Jacklin. She credits a Johnny Flynn concert as the moment her musical identity really clicked into place, which led her into the nu folk scene that was flourishing in London in the early 2010s. There is a warm, literary quality to her work that fits squarely in that tradition.
