The Big Man and the California songwriter made one of the more unlikely but irresistible pairings of the mid 1980s. Clarence Clemons, the towering saxophonist who anchored Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band from 1972 onward, teamed up with Jackson Browne in 1985 for the single "You're a Friend of Mine", a feel good duet that became a genuine hit and showed a warmer, looser side of Clemons away from the Springsteen machine. Clemons was already a larger than life presence, literally and musically, having built his reputation on those huge sax lines that defined so much of Springsteen's sound. The Browne collaboration gave him a moment in the spotlight as a solo voice, part of a run of solo work he pursued alongside his E Street duties. Clemons passed away in 2011, but the song remains a fondly remembered slice of 80s pop soul.
