Dan Weiss is a drummer and composer whose sound pulls from jazz, classical Indian music, West African rhythms, contemporary classical, and heavy metal all at once. That breadth is not just stylistic curiosity: his tabla studies with Pandit Samir Chatterjee run deep, and you can hear raga derived melodic shapes woven into his compositions alongside long rhythmic cycles that most jazz drummers wouldn't touch. He has been named one of "Five Jazz Drummers to Watch" by The New York Times and picked up Rising Star wins in back to back Downbeat Critic Polls. As a bandleader he works on several fronts. His piano trio has put out records on Sunnyside, and his solo project Starebaby goes somewhere completely different, blending heavy metal and electronics with improvised jazz. He also keeps a busy sideman career, having toured with Lee Konitz, Chris Potter, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and others. His catalogue spans labels like Pi Recordings, Sunnyside, and Cygnus, with releases running from drum solo records to full ensemble works.
