Detroit saxophonist Dave McMurray has spent decades doing what most musicians only dream about: playing with nearly everyone. His session credits read like a crate digger's wish list, from the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan to B.B. King and Iggy Pop. He was there from the start with Was (Not Was), contributing to every album the group ever made, and he held down the saxophone chair in Kid Rock's Twisted Brown Trucker Band for the better part of a decade. His Blue Note debut, Music Is Life from 2018, put him front and centre with original compositions and some well chosen covers. Then came a left turn that paid off beautifully: after performing with Bob Weir and discovering the Grateful Dead's songbook almost by accident, McMurray made Grateful Deadication, a jazz reimagining of the band's catalogue featuring Weir, Bettye Lavette, and others. A second volume followed in 2023, this time with his Detroit band alongside guests including Oteil Burbridge and Bob James.
