Before he was JPEGMafia, Barrington DeVaughn Hendricks was releasing mixtapes under the name Devon Hendryx while living between Okinawa and Tokyo, putting out projects like The Rockwood Escape Plan and Generation Y. Those early releases planted the seeds for one of the more genuinely experimental voices in hip hop today. His production style has always been the engine: distorted, restless, and hard to pin down across cloud rap, experimental hip hop, and harder edged sounds. Once he moved back to the US and rebranded as JPEGMafia, things took off fast. Veteran in 2018 got wide critical attention, All My Heroes Are Cornballs charted in the Billboard 200, and the 2023 collaboration Scaring the Hoes with Danny Brown kept the momentum going. His fifth studio album, I Lay Down My Life for You, arrived in 2024, with tracks like "either on or off the drugs" and "JPEGULTRA!" showing up on his channel around the same time.
