About
Experimental Products came out of Philadelphia in 1982, when Mark Wilde and Michael Gross started making stark, minimal synth music that would quietly become the stuff of legend. Their 1982 album Prototype eventually fetched over $500 a copy on the collectors market, and the 1984 EP Glowing in the Dark crossed over into dance clubs, hitting number 12 in the midwest and standing as the only independent release in the RockPool 100 that year. DJs still call it a classic. The group expanded to as many as six members over the years, with live visualist Mutschler adding elaborate slide shows to their performances. His video work even won a bronze medal at the 1985 International Film and TV Festival in New York. After Wilde died in 1987, Gross kept the project alive with rotating members, and in the early 2000s DJ Hell put out remixes through his International Deejay Gigolo label in Berlin. Vinyl On Demand later reissued Prototype as a double LP with bonus tracks in 2008.
