French Montana holds a record that most rappers can only dream about: he is the most streamed African born musical artist and the first African born artist to land a diamond certified song from the RIAA. That song is "Unforgettable" with Swae Lee, a top 10 hit from 2017 that in 2024 became the most streamed song from New York. Before any of that, the Moroccan born, Bronx raised rapper built a name through the Cocaine City DVD series, a street documentation project he ran for eight years across 14 volumes, featuring interviews with major hip hop figures. His 2012 major label deal combined Bad Boy Records and Maybach Music Group in a joint venture with Interscope, setting up his debut album Excuse My French the following year. Its lead single "Pop That" pulled in Rick Ross, Drake, and Lil Wayne and cracked the top 40. Jungle Rules came in 2017 and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200, his best chart showing. He also runs Coke Boys Records, the label home to artists including Lil Durk and Chinx.
