About

Guy Cuevas spent years shaping the sound of Paris nightlife from behind the turntables, and few DJs have done it with as much personality. At Club Sept in the 1970s, he built a reputation for wildly eclectic sets that moved from Philadelphia soul and funk through Salsa, Marvin Gaye, and the occasional burst of bird sounds or Marilyn Monroe, whatever felt right in the moment. Journalist Paquita Paquin called him a genius, and the Sept became the epicenter of Parisian disco largely because of him. When impresario Fabrice Emaer opened Le Palace in 1978, Cuevas followed and dialled things back toward straight disco, playing Donna Summer, the Village People and the Bee Gees, while still sneaking in Vivaldi concertos or helicopter sounds from Apocalypse Now. Beyond the booth, he worked as artistic director at Les Bains Douches and Barrio Latino, DJed fashion shows, and released three singles including Obsession on Island Records, which was reissued decades later on a funk compilation.
