About
Heavy Moss grew out of a spontaneous reunion between Lucas Harwood, bassist for King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and his old bandmate Sam Ingles back in their Geelong hometown. The two had previously played together in Atolls, a band with a gritty, retro 90s sound, but Heavy Moss takes things somewhere more dreamy and strange. Drawing on Elton John, King Krule, and Spacemen 3 as touchstones, they rounded out the lineup with Kyle Tickell and Bec Goring and started releasing music on the p(doom) label. Their debut album Dead Slow landed in late 2024, with half of it co mixed by Harwood and King Gizzard frontman Stu Mackenzie while they were out on tour together. The other half was handled by Michael Badger, the engineer behind Nonagon Infinity. Songwriting was genuinely collaborative across all three main writers, and Mackenzie apparently pushed Harwood to make some bolder sonic choices along the way. Parts of the record were even played over speakers at King Gizzard shows before it officially dropped.
