Out of Oakland, Hieroglyphics built one of underground hip hop's most recognizable crews around a loose collective of MCs and producers who mostly ran their own lane. The lineup reads like a who's who of West Coast underground rap: Del the Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, DJ Toure, producer Domino, and all four members of Souls of Mischief. That iconic three eyed face logo, which Del designed himself and turns out to be the Mayan numeral for 8, became so embedded in hip hop culture that Del once spotted it on someone in a Redman and Method Man video. As a collective they have put out three studio albums, starting with 3rd Eye Vision in 1998, then Full Circle in 2003, and The Kitchen in 2013. They also kept the catalog stocked with a run of compilation releases and B sides collections through the 2000s, all handled through their own Hieroglyphics Imperium imprint. Individual members stay busy with solo work too, so there is almost always something new coming from one corner of the crew or another.
