About
Elena Pogrebizhskaya fronted the Russian rock band Butch through much of the 2000s, releasing four albums that together sold around a hundred thousand copies. But music turned out to be a stepping stone rather than a destination. By 2007 she had moved into documentary filmmaking, and the shift stuck. Her film 'Mama, I'll Kill You' became something of a landmark, exposing the grim reality of life in a Moscow region orphanage and eventually contributing to real legislative change in Russia's child welfare system. Awards followed from Amnesty International and several international festivals. Her documentary work tends to tackle difficult territory, from post traumatic stress to eating disorders, funded through crowdfunding rather than institutional backing. These days she runs a YouTube channel, 'Films of Elena Pogrebizhskaya', with close to two million subscribers.
