About
Jan Bang has spent decades quietly shaping some of the most interesting corners of Norwegian electronic and jazz music, all while staying firmly rooted in his hometown of Kristiansand. His 1989 debut solo record, Frozen Feelings, featured both Morten Harket and Sidsel Endresen, and its title track ended up as the closing credits soundtrack for an Icelandic film. That knack for unexpected connections runs through everything he does. His 1998 album Pop Killer pulled in Nils Petter Molvær, Arild Andersen and Bugge Wesseltoft, landing a Spellemannprisen nomination in the Dance category. Bang co founded the Punkt Festival in Kristiansand in 2005, a live remix event that became a genuine hub for improvised and electronic music. He has collaborated extensively with David Sylvian, Arve Henriksen and guitarist Eivind Aarset, with their ECM release Dream Logic from 2012 standing out as a landmark. His work with Tigran Hamasyan, Henriksen and Aarset produced Atmosphères, also on ECM, in 2016. A Gammleng Award for studio work in 2004 rounded out recognition for a producer whose reach spans jazz, electronica and plenty of territory in between.
