Jessica Pratt makes the kind of music that feels like it was recorded in a room you can almost picture, intimate and slightly out of time. Her sound draws on 60s folk, California classic rock and freak folk, built around picked acoustic guitar and vocals that bend and stretch in ways that stick with you. Her 2012 self titled debut, originally tracked to analogue tape back in 2007, sold its first 500 pressings in under two weeks and caught the ear of outlets like Pitchfork almost immediately. Since then she has steadily grown more ambitious without losing that spell. On Your Own Love Again landed at number 85 on Pitchfork's best albums of the 2010s, and her 2019 album Quiet Signs was praised for its crystalline studio sound. Her fourth record, Here in the Pitch, arrived in 2024 to widespread acclaim, with Pitchfork giving it an 8.8 and a Best New Music badge. This time around she was drawing inspiration from Pet Sounds and the Walker Brothers, and the results earned her lead single a spot closing Chanel's Haute Couture show.
