Erich Wolfgang Korngold was something of a phenomenon: Gustav Mahler heard his work as a child and called him a musical genius, and by his early twenties he was being praised by Richard Strauss and Giacomo Puccini. Born in Brno in 1897, he composed his ballet Der Schneemann at age eleven, and it caused a sensation at the Vienna Court Opera. His opera Die tote Stadt premiered simultaneously in Hamburg and Cologne, and for a time he was one of the most celebrated composers in Europe. When Max Reinhardt brought him to Hollywood in the mid 1930s, Korngold essentially invented what film scoring could be. He called his film compositions "operas without words", and the sweeping, late Romantic style he brought to movies like Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood, which won him an Oscar in 1938, set the template for generations of composers after him. His Violin Concerto, which weaves themes from four of his film scores into a single concert work, has become a permanent fixture in the classical repertoire.
