Kultur Shock is one of the most genuinely unusual bands to come out of Seattle, blending Balkan folk music with punk, metal and art rock in a way that sounds chaotic on paper but absolutely coherent in practice. Their members hail from Bosnia, Bulgaria, Indonesia and the United States, and the band describes itself as "a live band of blue collar immigrants", which tells you pretty much everything about the attitude they bring. Active since 1996, they have clocked over 1,500 shows across the US and Europe and put out 13 albums. They spent their early years on Bill Gould's Koolarrow label, releasing three records including the defiantly titled We Came to Take Your Jobs Away. After going independent with their own Kultur Shock Records in 2006, they kept a prolific pace, working repeatedly with producer Jack Endino across six collaborations. Their 2023 release Acoustic Live strips things back, while House of Kultur arrived in 2025, showing the band is still very much at it.
