About

Loudness holds a serious piece of rock history: they were the first Japanese heavy metal band to sign with a major American label, landing a deal with Atco Records in 1985. Formed in Tokyo by guitarist Akira Takasaki and drummer Munetaka Higuchi, the band built their reputation on Takasaki's flashy shred guitar work and tight, hard hitting musicianship. Their album Thunder in the East cracked the Billboard 200 at No. 74, and the single Crazy Nights even got MTV rotation, something almost unheard of for a Japanese act at the time. Over a career spanning more than two dozen studio albums, Loudness kept evolving, sometimes controversially. Swapping to an English speaking vocalist in the late eighties to chase the American market cost them fans back home, and the glam metal direction of Lightning Strikes split opinion too. Still, the original lineup reunited in 2000 and kept recording together until the death of Higuchi in 2008. Takasaki has remained the one constant throughout every lineup change, keeping the band alive and active.
