About
Lowen blend progressive, doom, death and stoner metal with genuine Middle Eastern musicology, not just surface level flavour. Guitarist Shem Lucas spent serious time studying folk music from Egypt, Turkey and Iran, eventually figuring out how to recreate microtones on Western instruments through quarter tone bends and slurred phrasing, something a musicologist told him flat out couldn't be done. Vocalist Nina Saeidi sings in English, Persian, Akkadian and Sumerian, drawing on the Tahrir technique and pulling lyrical inspiration from ancient mythology, science fiction and Mesopotamian history. Their 2024 album Do Not Go to War With the Demons of Mazandaran, released on Church Road Records, is rooted in the Shahnameh epic and carries a track titled after an Iranian legal term used against political prisoners sentenced to death. Sammy Urwin and Justine Jones of Employed to Serve, who run the label, sum up their sound as "world prog", which honestly undersells it. The band are already working on a third record.
