Few voices in Hindi film history carry the emotional weight that Mukesh brought to every song. The Delhi born playback singer became the definitive sound behind Raj Kapoor, lending his distinctive melancholic tone to 110 songs for the actor across some of Bollywood's most beloved films. His knack for conveying raw feeling rather than technical showiness set him apart, and songs like "Jeena yahan marna yahan" from Mera Naam Joker and "Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye" from Anand remain touchstones of Hindi cinema. Mukesh shaped his own style after early years spent imitating his idol K. L. Saigal so convincingly that Saigal himself reportedly couldn't tell the difference. Music director Naushad helped him move beyond that imitation, and from there he built a catalogue of around 1,300 songs. His most fruitful collaboration was with the composer duo Shankar Jaikishan, for whom he recorded 133 songs and earned three of his four Filmfare Awards. The National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer came for "Kai Baar Yuhi Dekha Hai" from Rajnigandha.
