About
Quinteto Astor Piazzolla has been carrying the torch for Astor Piazzolla's music since 1998, but they have never been content to just replay the greatest hits. Their 2023 album Operation Tango, released on E54Music, reflects that philosophy directly: saxophonist and flutist Julián Vat has described the group's mission as shining a light on lesser known Piazzolla pieces that deserve wider attention, alongside the classics. The album pulls from unexpected corners, including tracks from the tango opera María de Buenos Aires and a song featured on the soundtrack of Fernando Solanas's film Sur. Operation Tango earned the group the Latin Grammy for Best Tango Album at a ceremony in Seville. The quintet behind the record brings together Pablo Mainetti on bandoneon, Serdar Geldymuradov on violin, Armando de la Vega on guitar, Nicolás Guerschberg on piano, and Daniel Falasca on double bass. To support the album they toured across Brazil, Portugal, Mexico, Uruguay, and the United States.
