About
Also known as: Ralf
Ralf Mackenbach is the only Dutch winner of the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, taking the top spot in 2009 with 'Click Clack', a song inspired by his hobby of tap dancing. He scored 121 points in Kiev, and the single peaked at number 7 in the Dutch Single Top 100. His debut album Ralf cracked the top 10 in the Dutch album charts and went gold in March 2011 after shifting more than 25,000 copies. Two more albums followed, Moving On and Seventeen, and he returned to the Junior Eurovision stage in 2010, 2012 and 2022 as part of interval acts. Offstage, Mackenbach took a sharp turn into science. He completed a master's degree in nuclear fusion at Eindhoven University of Technology and then earned his PhD cum laude in November 2023, focusing on fusion plasma turbulence. Since 2024 he has been a postdoctoral researcher at EPFL in Lausanne, applying the same energy he once put into pop music to the challenge of replicating solar processes on Earth.
