About
Ricky Nelson holds a quirky piece of chart history: his 1958 single "Poor Little Fool" was the very first number one on Billboard's newly launched Hot 100. That set the tone for a remarkable run, 54 songs on the Hot 100 between 1957 and 1973, with 17 top ten hits along the way. He was also a genuine movie star, holding his own alongside John Wayne and Dean Martin in Howard Hawks's Rio Bravo in 1959, a role that earned him a Golden Globe nomination. When his teen idol image started to feel like a straitjacket, Nelson pivoted hard toward country rock, forming the Stone Canyon Band in 1969. That move gave him a second wind, capped by "Garden Party" in 1972, a wry dig at audiences who only wanted nostalgia, which reached number six on the Hot 100. He kept performing live through the seventies and into the eighties, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, two years after his death in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1985.
