About

Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew" is one of those tracks that keeps proving its worth decades after it was recorded. The Buffalo born organist cut a string of albums for Blue Note in the 1970s that built a devoted cult following once the acid jazz scene brought them back into the light, and hip hop producers have kept his name alive ever since. A Tribe Called Quest sampled "Mystic Brew" for "Electric Relaxation", and J. Cole used it twice, in "Forbidden Fruit" and then reversed, pitched and slowed for "Neighbors". As a sideman, Foster's organ work spans an impressive range of collaborators including George Benson, on whose landmark album Breezin' he played, as well as Grant Green, Grover Washington Jr., Stanley Turrentine, Roberta Flack, Earl Klugh and Stevie Wonder. He also works as a record producer, making him one of the more quietly versatile figures in jazz funk and soul jazz.
