About

Ruger burst onto the Nigerian music scene with a debut song that racked up seventy million views in just three days, which was enough to get D'Prince signing him to Jonzing World and Sony Music Entertainment UK. His early EPs, Pandemic and The Second Wave, showed off a sound rooted in Afrobeats with dancehall and reggae flavours woven in. "Bounce" from Pandemic became a genuine hit, while "Dior" from The Second Wave cracked the UK Afrobeats Singles Chart. His single "Asiwaju" then spent a record month at number one on Nigeria's Apple Music chart. By 2023 he had released his debut album Ru the World, and in 2024 he left Jonzing World to launch his own label, Blown Boy Entertainment. Around the same time he teamed up with Bnxn for the collaborative mixtape RnB, whose lead single Romeo Must Die debuted at number 11 on the Billboard Afrobeat chart. Picking up the Best New Artiste prize at the Soundcity MVP Awards in 2023 was a nice stamp of approval, but the streaming numbers had already made the case.
