Sierra Maestra have spent decades keeping the flame of classic Cuban son alive. Founded in Havana in 1976, the group made it their mission to revive the earthy, syncopated sound of 1920s son, the style that originally came out of the mountain range in eastern Cuba that shares their name. Their lineup read like a who's who of Cuban music: Juan de Marcos González was a key member before leaving in 1996 to build the Afro Cuban All Stars, and Jesús Alemañy departed the same year to front the horn heavy outfit ¡Cubanismo!. Despite the departures, the band kept recording and gigging, even playing the Glastonbury Festival in 2008. Their catalogue stretches from Con Sabor a Cuba and the party ready ¡dundunbanza! through to Son: Soul Of A Nation, a title that pretty much sums up what they stand for.
