When Snarky Puppy teamed up with the Metropole Orkest, the result was Sylva, an album that shot straight to number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, the Jazz Album chart, and the Contemporary Jazz Album chart, and went on to win the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album. The Metropole Orkest is a Dutch ensemble that blends big band jazz with a full symphonic string section, making it a natural fit for Snarky Puppy's dense, genre crossing sound. Snarky Puppy itself is an American jazz fusion collective led by bassist Michael League, mixing jazz, funk, rock, and world music with a rotating cast of around 40 musicians over the years. The Metropole Orkest, founded in 1945 and based in the Netherlands, has a long history of boundary pushing collaborations across jazz, pop, and film music. Together, the two acts produced something that neither could quite pull off alone.
