About
Gerold Limon, known as Soul Jawa, built his name as a Surinamese Dutch soul and pop Jawa singer with a voice that earned him the nickname the Surinamese Gerald Levert. He first caught wider attention in 1990 with his performance of Arki mi at SuriPop VI, and that same year released the maxisingle Still you are my true love as a duet with Lucretia Muringen. In 1996 he was part of Astaria when they backed Indonesian campursari star Didi Kempot on his Suriname tour. He later continued his career in the Netherlands, taking part in the Soundmixshow with John Oldenstam and Maikel van Hetten, covering If you walk away by the Goodfellaz. Around 2011 he became lead singer of pop Jawa group Rupia, a role he held for nearly five years. In 2015 he staged a show paying tribute to Gerald Levert's musical legacy. Limon passed away in January 2016 at the age of 47, and a musical tribute was held in Almere a week and a half later.
