Stuart A. Staples is best known as the distinctive voice behind Tindersticks, the British indie band where his deep, nasal croon has been the defining sound for decades. Before Tindersticks took shape, he was part of Asphalt Ribbons, a group whose final lineup was practically a dry run for what came next. Beyond the band, Staples has built a serious parallel career as a film composer, working repeatedly with French director Claire Denis on films like White Material and High Life. His solo output includes albums Lucky Dog Recordings 03 04 and Leaving Songs, as well as collaborative work with bandmate Dave Boulter. In 2017 he stepped behind the camera to direct Minute Bodies, a film he also scored alongside Christine Ott and Thomas Belhom, drawing on archival footage from naturalist filmmaker F. Percy Smith. Most recently he contributed the score for Un Beau Soleil Interieur in 2023.
