Before he was making people move on dancefloors, John MacLean was shredding guitar in the Providence post hardcore band Six Finger Satellite, where a young James Murphy worked as sound engineer. When that band fell apart, Murphy went on to found DFA Records and LCD Soundsystem, and eventually pulled MacLean back into music, getting him into electronic production and releasing his compositions on DFA compilations. His debut album Less Than Human came out in 2005, and the records that followed, including The Future Will Come and In a Dream, built a sound that draws from house, disco and dance punk without ever being too tidy about it. Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem features on "Dance With Me", one of the act's most recognisable tracks, and MacLean has collaborated with singer Amy Douglas under the name Peach Melba for material that leans deeper into Chicago house. A DJ Kicks mix for !K7 in 2010 showed his range as a selector, and the 2019 compilation The Brighter The Light rounded up key moments from his DFA years.
