About
Tref is a Belgian folk group built around the accordion, specifically the diatonic button accordion known as the trekzak. The lineup brings together some serious names from the European folk scene, including Wim Claeys of Ambrozijn and GÖZE, and Didier Laloy, who also plays with S Tres and Trio Trad. The group writes all their own material and deliberately blends folk with a wide range of other styles, so no two records sound quite the same. Their discography stretches from their 2001 debut to Dampf in 2012, and they returned in 2024 with a new release called Brise, showing they are still very much active. Percussion and berimbau player Frédéric Malempré rounds out the sound, giving the music a rhythmic edge you might not expect from an accordion led folk outfit.
