Somewhere between criminally underrated and genuinely indispensable, Walt Weiskopf has spent decades as one of jazz's most versatile figures. JazzTimes has called him a highly potent tenor saxophonist with a strong Coltrane and Rollins influence, and his catalog as a leader stretches to well over twenty albums. He spent fourteen years with the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra and in 2002 joined Steely Dan, landing a spot on the title track of their 2003 album Everything Must Go before going on to work with the Donald Fagen Band and the Dukes of September. Weiskopf is just as serious about education and writing as he is about playing. He has taught at Eastman, Temple University and New Jersey City University, and authored multiple books on jazz improvisation covering topics from Coltrane harmony to diminished scales. His 2004 sextet recording Sight to Sound, funded in part by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, drew inspiration from visual artists including Dalí, Picasso and Van Gogh. More recently he has been recording steadily with his European Quartet.
