Venue
Club UpKorte Leidsedwarsstraat 26-1
1017 RC Amsterdam
Club Up sits in the building directly behind De Kring, the artists' society near Leidseplein in Amsterdam. When fire safety regulations required an extra emergency exit for De Kring, which had been established in the building in 1992, the adjoining structure provided the solution. Rather than simply cutting a door, the space was converted into a full club, opening in 2008. The two venues remain connected, and on some club nights visitors can cross into De Kring itself, a members only society where art, music and conversation have long overlapped. That origin gives Club Up something few Amsterdam clubs can claim: a direct, physical link to an older cultural institution rather than a background in a repurposed warehouse or former cinema. The club moved from its original address on Short Leidsedwarsstraat to a larger space capable of holding around 200 guests, which is still a compact figure by Amsterdam standards. That size shapes the atmosphere considerably, keeping the dancefloor tight and the sound immediate. The programming leans toward emerging DJs and producers, with electronic music forming the backbone of most nights. House in its various forms appears frequently, from funky and groovy strains to deeper and more leftfield approaches, alongside urban nights featuring hip hop, R&B and dancehall, and Latin focused events built around reggaeton and Afro Caribbean rhythms. Collectives and promoters often use the venue for their Amsterdam debuts, drawn by its central location and the particular intimacy that comes with a room of this scale.
