APULIART DJ SCHOOL SHOWCASE

Heineken Hoek is a Grand Café on the corner of Leidseplein in central Amsterdam, a square long associated with the city's nightlife and theatre life. The café describes itself as a place where Amsterdam history and the present day meet, and it has been part of the local social scene since the 1950s. Older photographs place it next to the City Theater on Leidseplein as early as 1943, which suggests the corner has been a gathering spot for longer than the current name has been in use. Its main identity is that of a corner café rather than a purpose built music hall, so it works differently from the large concert halls elsewhere in the city. It should not be confused with the Heineken Music Hall, the separate concert hall near the Amsterdam ArenA in the southeast, or with the Heineken Experience, the former brewery on Stadhouderskade that now serves as a museum and event location. Heineken Hoek is a smaller, more casual room on the Leidseplein itself. Music is a side of the venue rather than its whole purpose. Concert listings show it hosting live performances on a modest scale, and the house genre stands out in the programming, with a show by Rue Jay among the upcoming dates. That fits the setting: a busy square, a café crowd, and the kind of set that suits an evening out in the centre of the city. The available sources say little about how long the venue has hosted concerts or how its programming has developed, so its musical side is best understood as part of the café's wider role on Leidseplein.
